The LuminoCity festival immerses visitors in a first-ever world of light within New York City, celebrating the holidays through leading-edge light art that combines the fantasy and wonder of childhood with the deep cultural significance of Chinese lantern festivals.
Dating back to the Western Han Dynasty, circa 200 BCE, Chinese lantern festivals are important traditional celebrations of the New Year and other significant holidays.
Zigong City, located in the Sichuan basin, the heart of China’s most ancient region, is home to the world’s most skilled lantern artists and hosts an annual lantern festival that attracts more than two million people.
LuminoCity is rooted in the Zigong festival, bringing the two-thousand-year history of the Chinese lantern festival to New York City through an extraordinary new light artform.
Schools, cultural institutions, community groups and organizations are all welcome to partner with LuminoCity to coordinate group visits and special events at the festival. LuminoCity is designed to accommodate partners who may want to use facilities, including the performance stage, for special programming events.
